Introduction to Social Bookmarking

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking), the definition of social bookmarking is

“A method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata, typically in the form of tags that collectively and/or collaboratively become a folksonomy. Folksonomy is also called social tagging, “the process by which many users add metadata in the form of keywords to shared content.

In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains. The allowed people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, or via a search engine.”

This is how you can use social bookmarking to get traffic to your website for free.

First understand that social bookmarking allows you to get incoming traffic to your blog/post and increase the possibility that your blog/post is seen and rank well. How is that possible? Take for example if you were to submit a blog page or a blog post to 51 social book marking sites listed below, that very same page or post can show up as 51 unique results in the search engine. I repeat, that page or post can be seen as 51 unique entry. This means that you can easily secure 10 out of 10 search result that is shown on the first page. You might even own the next few search pages. This is the possibility when you use social book marking as part of your tool.

Some argued that social bookmarking links are not as “valuable” to the search engine as other “hard coded” links. In my opinion, whatever gets you your traffic would still be something worth investing your time in.

The secret in social bookmarking then boils down to how precise are you in selecting your keywords. The more targeted they are, the better they get in the rank.

One example, instead of using generic keywords like “buy digital camera”, or “canon camera”, I will use more targeted by saying “canon power shot SD970 IS digital camera”

Let me share with you an example of how you should go about doing it.

1) Shot a video of yourself talking about the product. You can ask your friend to help you in this.
2) Upload the video to youtube.com and other video submission sites. You can see a list of them at another blog post “Viral Video Marketing | Online Video Marketing”
3) Upload your Youtube video into your blog
4) Take the blog post url and post it to 10-20 social bookmarking sites using http://SocialMarker.com/
5) Next take your video page at youtube and other video sites and post them to 10-20 social bookmarking sites using http://SocialMarker.com/

i.e. when you upload a video to a video site like youtube.com simple use http://SocialMarker.com/ to bookmark it.

I know of an internet marketer who uses the method that I shared with you above to secure 6 of the Top 10 position in the search result within hours of using the method. You might want to give it a try as well.

An interesting point that you might want to take note is that for the videos that are in video sites like youtube.com or myspace.com would still be able to stay in the top 10 position even after a month. However, most likely that the blog post that are in the social bookmarking sites would not be able to do so.

This means that whenever possible, do up a video and used the method that I have highlighted above and get the videos pages from video sites socially bookmarked. You should also submit your important pages / post to new social bookmarking sites every 1 – 2 weeks so that you can maintain your ranking in search engines like Google.

Note: The method that I have shared with you above can be accomplished within 20 minutes. This includes taking of the video. If you have more time, you should always watermark your videos with your url such that they will point to the site that you want to promote.

1) Have An Impact Starting
It is something so simple yet so many people out there tend to miss out. The average person attention span on a website is 3 second . This 3 second creates the first impression that a person have and this will affect if they are going to stay on the site or not.

Likewise, the first few second of the video will determine if the video is worth watching. When you watch your video ask yourself these questions:

-In the first 15 second => Do I get the point of the Video?
-In the first 30 second => have I learned anything new? Experience something different? Am I entertained?
-In the first minute => Why should I go on?

2) Keep it Short And Sweet
You want your viewers to remember your videos. Therefore it is important to keep your videos short. If you want, break down a long video into several parts. Each not taking more than 10 minutes. 10 minutes is the maximum for viral videos, any thing longer than that is a training video which may entertain, but not necessary make a person share it with someone else.

3) Only Have One Message
Studies have shown that people can only remember up to 10 points in a Video. Out of these 10 points, only 3 of them would have any impact on the person directly. Better yet, if you are able to focus your ten minute on just one point, you not only get their full attention but you are also able to give more value to your viewer. On the long run, you are letting your view know that you are someone who provides quality content for them.

4) Have a Call to Action
This is to let your viewers know that once they finished watching your video, that should share it with their friends. They can twitter it, facebook it or even blog about it. Whatever the case it, let them know exactly what they should do.

Recently, www.amazon.com has decided to change it’s associate’s program policies for associates promoting products in the USA and Canada

NOTE THIS DATE :  May 1st 2009

As of 1st may 2009, Amazon (www.amazon.com) is not allowing anymore traffic from Pay Per Click (PPC) DIRECT LINKING to any of their products

So What is direct linking to amazon?

Let me give you an example of what was done in the past.

Example of a direct linking to amazon.com

This is a typical way on how some one would search for a product on like. In the above example, we are searching for “Kindle” – Amazon’s new wireless reading device.

When we key in Kindle in google we came to the page above. As you can see the first sponsor link on the top right is kindle from Amazon. And as we click on the link we are brought to this page

The page can be found here: “Kindle 2″

Anyone who buy this product or any other product within 24 hours through this link and the creator of the Sponsor ad would gain a commission from Amazon.

The above example is what we call direct linking to Amazon (www.amazon.com).

However, this does not mean that affiliates can’t make money online, all they need to do is to build their own website or blog with articles and products which is not a direct link from PPC to their site and Amazon will still pay referral fee to these affiliates.

An example would be:

BE WARNED: This change in policy by Amazon would affect all PPC / direct linking strategy that is out in the market. Be sure to terminate / pause your campaign is you have not done so already
